Develop the functionality for editors to be able to define if the main horizontal navigation, shows a dropdown of the content in the section, upon a hover or click of an arrow next to the section title. The idea of this is to reduce the number of clicks that a user has to make.

Stories

AS AN ADMIN I want to be able to define if the main sections in my websites horizontal navigation show a drop-down style of navigation or not SO THAT it reduces the number of clicks that a user is required to make to get to a specific page in my site.

AS A USER I want to be able to navigate around a website using drop-downs on the main sections SO THAT I can get to the relevant pages of information more quickly.

What are you trying to do that our product is not able to support?

Hovering on menus should allow a drop down menu to appear.

What is the reason that you need to be able to do this?

This will improve the usability of the site, making its layout and structure easier for users to navigate without having to guess what further page might exist behind the top level menu items.

What is the impact of you not being able to do this?

Make the site less user-friendly and more difficult to navigate, may increase bounce rate where we want to keep people on our site to explore our content. This is a near standard convention for many sites, one which suspect many users would expect.

The Oversight Committee wanted to find out more about usability concerns for drop downs. Our findings were:

If done properly there don’t seem to be the accessibility concerns that there used to be. Need to be able to use the menus with keyboard alternatives. But to keep in mind the needs of users who find mouse movement difficult or have slower response times.
