Three column display for contents listing pages

Proposal
Currently, if you define that you want a web page within a section to use a '3 columns view', you will see that the left column gets narrower to accommodate the portlets on the right side of the page. However, when you do this, you are unable to made the default landing page of the section have a 3 column layout as well, due to the way that the landing page is managed. We propose that with this improvement, we will change the way that this is managed, so that editors will be able to define that all pages, including the landing page of a section, will be able to use the 3 column view. In turn, this will provide a better experience for users, it will mean that switching between pages in the section will not be jarring with the left column changing widths.
Stories
AS AN EDITOR I want to be able to define that the default landing page of a section uses a 3 column layout, even when using the content listing display SO THAT I can keep this page consistent with all of the other pages in the section that are using a 3 column display.
AS A USER I want to see the landing page of a section that is using the 3 column layout display to also use a 3 column display SO THAT the section has a consistent look and feel.
Submission
What are you trying to do that our product is not able to support?
We have sections on our website which use the three column layout with a content listing display for the main page of the section. The content listing page uses the two column layout which makes the width of the navigation inconsistent across the section.
What is the reason that you need to be able to do this?We would like the width of the navigation to be consistent across the whole section.
What is the impact of you not being able to do this?It looks messy which makes it seem a bit unprofessional.
