Enhancement in the usability of images through the creation of a media widget to help you more easily manage and upload images, sound and video across the site. This is the first phase of development that is planned for this area.

Proposal

The creation of our media widget will allow editors to more easily access and upload media and images. When selecting to upload a lead image on the site, you will be presented with the media widget pop up where you can browse the image library, or add to the image library. You will be able to add captions, alt text and copyright information. In addition there is a section in the widget where you can embed videos/soundcloud etc via an external URL. These items will be covered by 3 options within the widget (insert from library, upload new, insert from URL).

Stories

AS AN Editor I want to be able to use a simple widget to upload an image to selected item e.g., as a Lead Image. This image SHOULD be automatically stored in Images Library and referenced from the edited item. The reference SHOULD be visible for editor as e.g., /images/test.jpg

AS AN Editor I want to be able to use a simple widget to select an external image e.g., www.test.com/test.jpg to selected item e.g., as a Lead Image. This image SHOULD be automatically stored in Images Library and referenced from the edited item. The reference SHOULD be visible for editor as e.g., /images/test.jpg, the image item SHOULD keep the external URL value.

AS AN Editor I want to be able to use a simple widget to select an image from the Images Library e.g., as a Lead Image. The selecting process MUST be done in a modal. The reference SHOULD be visible for editor as e.g., /images/test.jpg.

AS AN Editor I want to be able to add Licence/copyright information, Alternative text and captions on all images (excluding thumbnails for this development)

AS AN Editor I want to be able to link to an images original source from the image on the website, SO THAT I am crediting the image owner if the image does not belong to me.

The copyright, licence information should also be clickable - with a link to the licence provider - e.g. shutterstock

We'd like it if the widget could be designed so that as a potential next stage in development we could link to our image management system and pull metadata from there along with the image.

NB, we think that the copyright and licence information is absolutely essential, but the rest of the widget is not quite as essential.

There have been many requests from people wanting to be able to manage their image library directly from the place that they are inserting images, and the media widget is the best solution to this, as it will provide us with a good platform to create future enhancements to the media functionality within Haiku. Linking it to the image management system could be a really interesting next phase, definitely submit that as a request for the next round of dev :)

Hi Jacqueline,

This has not been released yet. We are currently working on sorting the planned releases for the next few weeks. There have been a couple of delays due to dependencies. We will update this and let you know when you can expect to see this feature.
