Haiku Evolution
Text overlay for carousel slides
accepted
3
A feature request to develop the functionality that will allow editors to create text overays for slideshow images, within the Haiku system.
Proposal
We will develop the functionality that will allow editors to be able to define text to be used as overlay text for a slide image. The editor will be able to define where on the image the text is located, and whether or not it has a shaded background that will ensure the text stands out on different coloured images.
Stories
AS AN EDITOR I want to be able to create carousel slides with text overlay SO THAT users can see the image, but also the text is readable (not an image) SO THAT I can comply with accessibility standards, and ensure that the content is fully searchable.
AS AN EDITOR I want to be able to define where on the slide images it is that the text overlay is located SO THAT I can ensure that the part of the image that I want to show, is not obscured by the text overlay.
AS A USER I want to see carousel images with text on them, but still be able to read the text using a screen reader or similar SO THAT even if I have accessibility issues, I can still see all of the content on the page.
Potential extension:
AS AN EDITOR I want to be able to define the opactiy of the background that the text sits on SO THAT I can make sure the text is visible across a variety of images.
Submission
What are you trying to do that our product is not able to support?
It would be great to have a carousel slide option that looked rather like www.ox.ac.uk slides - with text overlaying the image.
What is the reason that you need to be able to do this?I've noticed that editors are often including text in their carousel images - mainly to get the effect of text overlay. This is really bad for accessibility, so it would be good to find out if editors would be interested in an option that did this correctly.
What is the impact of you not being able to do this?Unless we supply extensive alternative text for images, we are really infringing accessibility rules.
The Haiku Oversight Committee thought it would be good to also have further guidance on accessibility in user guides and training.
